You shall not PARK
I am a big of Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State (disclaimer: the company I work with services the Lagos State Government). I love his work and in every thing he does, I might support him. I say “might”, because, he is a human. Humans are not infallible.
I work at Alausa, Central Business District. NERDC Road to be precise. This road enjoys its fair share of traffic, not unlike any typical Lagos road. Without saying much, sometimes there’s traffic, sometimes there isnt. To combat the times of high traffic, LASTMA (Lagos State Traffic Management Authority) saw it fit in their greatest of wisdoms to install “No Parking” signs on the road. I have not much of a problem with that, except for one thing. This road is a high profile road in the Central Business District, raising a number of questions:
- Do they expect business men to move around without vehicles?
- If they move around with vehicles, where do they expect them to park?
- If they do not move around with vehicles, how do they expect them to get around?
- With no commercial bus route, how will people get to their destinations?
- Commercial motorcyclists (okada) have been banned, so obviously, that isnt an option. What then is the other option for movement?
- Why place no parking signs on a road that can conveniently contain 4 vehicles at a time.
As much as I love a Lagos with little or no traffic, I find the move to abolish parking in some places absurd (putting it extremely nice).
LASTMA, take note. I hope you read this blog.
